"As you sip your latte and munch on your Weeties for breakfast tomorrow morning, spare a thought for the almost one million "waste product" calves born to dairy cows each season to keep them producing the milk on your brekkie.
Normally, within 24 hours, these calves are ripped from their mothers, causing immense distress to both and within five days, these calves are stuffed in a cattle truck and sent to the slaughter house (meat known as veal). As if that were not bad enough, the Australian dairy industry now wants a nationwide legal standard to deny baby calves their mother's milk for the last 30 hours of life!
While Australian farmers may be the most efficient in the world in dollar terms, I doubt if these calves and their mothers would agree with this shocking cruelty that the Government and the dairy industry take great pains to keep an unholy secret." - Michele Dixon (retired farmer), Echuca (Australia).
